One of the original grain spirits, "whisky" derives itself from the Gaelic word which mean "water". It's full meaning is uisge-beathe which means "Water of Life". In an era where nothing was scientifially known of the methods why and how whisky was created, it was considered a gift from the heavens, and healthier for the body and spirit than water. Why is that? Quite simply, the water supply around the 15th century wasn't very safe. Therefor whisky, which was a distilled spirit, was toxin free and resulted in no sickly or noxious side-effects other than an unpleasent hangover if one drank too much. |
