Tequila was first produced in the 16th century in the small town of Tequila which was not offically recognized until the mid 1600s. Originally distilled by the Aztecs, Spanish conquistadors adopted the distillations methods they had observed into a drink unique to Spain and North America - Tequila.. The most commonly recognized tequila style of today, ex:Jose Cuervo, was not actually invented until the eraly 1800s in Mexico.
